Bratislava, Slovakia

Today we are in the city of Bratislava, capital city of Slovakia; it was a pleasant town to walk around with narrow, poorly maintained cobblestone streets filled mostly with restaurants and souvenir shops, but we did manage to find antique shops and interesting little alleyways to wander through. Once  again there are medieval, gothic and  older 16 ,17 & 18 century styled buildings.

We were taken by bus to the top of a hill to visit a castle where Queen Marie Christine once lived, the sister of Marie Antoinette. Our guide was hilarious, talking about he politicians and the obvious dislike the city folk has for them.

She said their politicians are excellent; excellent at creating problems and excellent at not being able to solve them.

They often send the politicians away to conferences and conventions...but they always come back.

Excavators started digging under the castle to make an underground carpark; the people are annoyed that some Celtic ruins have been disturbed; the guide said the only archaeological knowledge the  politicians have dates back to their last pay packet.

She said later that the people were enjoying the fact that they could run their pollies down and not be put in jail for it, so it seems like they are fair game, but she didn't have alot of respect for them.  The only person the city has any respect for is the president who is a banker, not a politician and who has a 'charity heart', he helps a lot of children and unfortunate people.

Have had the farewell dinner tonight so we're all a bit tired and now heading for bed. we don't get off the boat until Friday but they said the last night is busy packing so they do the farewell dinner two nights earlier.
