Melk and Durnstein

This morning in Melk we visited the 11th century Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe's largest monasteries which has some stunning frescoed ceilings and an ornate library & church, then we sailed through a picturesque part of the Danube river to Durnstein, known for its baroque blue church steeple...barely visible in one or two photos. In the afternoon we toured the town then Lex and I climbed 300 meters up some very steep paths to the ruined castle which once imprisoned King Richard the Lionheart.
The views up here were stunning, we could see a long stretch of the Danube river, the grape vines which grow up very steep hillsides and the lovely little town below.

We hear over the years that people get Australia and Austria mixed up; we laughed today when we saw T shirts and fridge magnets with a picture of a kangaroo and the words "No Kangaroos in Austria". Obviously people over here get confused too :-)

Vienna tomorrow!
