This morning when we woke we were docked at Toth, a point on the anal where boats stop to visit Nuremberg because it doesn't have its own port. A 30 minute bus ride took us into the town and we had a guide telling us of the history along the way. 90% of the Old Town suffered extensive damage during WWII, much of it has now been rebuilt in the more modern style which was cheaper and quicker than trying to restore it to its former glory.
It is one of the few medieval cities that has retained its walled fortifications as many were torn down once they became redundant with the technological advances in siege engines that could easily destroy the walls.
The town was first settled in 850AD with a castle dating back to 1050AD. The first German paper mill was built, the clarinet was invented here and it has the largest toy fair in the world.
We are really enjoying his cruise. For someone who wasn't interested in going to Europe, wasn't interested in history and certainly was not interested in gong on a cruise I (Lex) have become a Cruising-Europe-History nerd!
