Salzburg

This morning, with a temp of 9c by midday and rain, we had a choice of three excursions; we chose the one going to Salzberg because Lex was keen to see where the Sound of Music had been filmed. A 90 minute bus ride from where the boat docked at Passau got us into Salzberg at about 10am. We had a guided walking tour of the city for an hour where some of its history an some of the Sound of Music sites were shown to us ie the horse statue with Lex standing on front of it is where Maria and the children sang some of Do Ra Me and behind that are the steps they jumped up and down during the song. and then free time for a couple of hours. The film was made in many different locations all over the city as well as at a studio in Hollywood.
We decided to do a Hop on Hop off bus tour specially designed to see more of the sites but it really wasn't worth it because the commentary didn't match what w wre driving passed. A recorded commentary told us about 'that building' and what happened there but we had already gone passed it so it was a bit disappointing, though we did see the house and the lake which was used for the outside shots of the film and we stopped long enough for photos - it's the white house with the lake in front. This buildings is privately owned so can only been seen from afar.
Back in the town centre we walked around for a while looking at buildings and eating a large dough pretzels covered in cheese and chili flakes. These large pretzels are very popular over here.
We met the tour guide an the rest of the group at 2pm and travelled by bus to the Australia Lake district; here the lake are beautiful and the road where Maria and the children hang from the trees as Gayorg, Max and the Baroness drove passed was there, as is the beautiful church where the wedding took place. The first two photos are the inside of the church...St Michaels.

Another hour on the bus and we're back at the boat, very tired and ready for a rest. It did get to 13c in the end and the rain cleared.

The website isn't working for you to send messages to us but the email address is.
