This morning we stopped at Wurzburg and visited the Wursburg Residenz, which is more like a palace than a residence. It is where the Bishop Prince used to live at the time when the Bishop was in charge of church and state hence his title Bishop Prince, until Napolean decided the two should be ruled separately. The inside was just stunning from the entrance where a carriage drawn by 6 horses would enter the house, turn around and stop at the bottom of the massive staircase which lead to the rest of the house. The largest ceiling fresco ever painted is magnificent and from there the rooms just got fancier. Some perhaps a little tooo fancy! No photos are allowed. :-( but we have bought postcards. Neither words nor photos can truly do justice to the work that was put into decorating this building.
We then wandered down into the town, and looked into some of the magnificent churches, the town square, then to the 15th century Alte Mainbrucke bridge overlooked by the new bishops' castle. We say 'new' but that is hundreds of years old.
It was sad to see some of the pictures after just a single night of allied bombing destroyed most of the town in 1945 just weeks before the end of the war, many of the buildings were destroyed and remained as shells until it was possible to restore them. Such a waste!
Does anyone remember us saying we would never do a cruise because it would be boring??? We were wrong! Certainly not adventurous, but it is sooo relaxing.
Off for dinner now! More food.
